Marksmanship

Marksmanship

Cadets in JROTC study various military subjects throughout the school year. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, subjects such as leadership, marksmanship, military terminology, military history, map reading, assembly, and disassembly of the M-14 and first aid may be presented to the class.

One of the most popular courses of academic study in the military science department is our marksmanship unit. Cadets spend several hours in a classroom setting, studying rifle safety before ever handling a live weapon. Once safety has been covered, cadets learn the basics of shooting by spending a few days in the range, learning their shooting positions as well as the range commands. The range is always manned by a certified military instructor. Cadets fire a Daisy Avanti 853 air rifle in three positions to qualify for a shooting badge. Depending on the cadet’s score, he/she can qualify as a marksman (180), sharpshooter (200), or expert (220).
